On April 25, 1913, the City of San Marino was incorporated, taking the name from James Shorb's San Marino Rancho. This name came from the original Shorb estate in Frederick County, Maryland. His grandfather, John Shorb, is said to have given the name "San Marino" to his estate because it had the same acreage as the Republic of San Marino near Italy's Adriatic shore.
With its majestic trees and historic homes, San Marino boasts one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in California. Maintaining a small town atmosphere despite tremendous growth allows San Marino to keep its charm and character.
